Alan, I've found the same experience with my own Silvia (sorry, only have the one!). Minute dose variations, which I can achieve with my Cunill Tranquilo grinder, can significantly vary the length, volume and crema in the shot. It makes a bigger difference than small grind fineness variations. I'd go as far as to say it's the key to success. Not sure I'd stuff the filter basket nearly as full as you did, but I'll give that a go too!

p.s. the Intermac Heavy Duty Timer ($10 at Home Depot) solves the leaving it on all night problem...
