I wish this article had been around a few years ago when I didn't know the difference between a thermoblock or a boiler. I will recommend this article to friends who are just getting into espresso and need help putting pictures to words. Thank you!

Very informative Alan. It's important that "Joe Public" understands why there is a big price premium between machines. Anyone can make something look pretty with a fancy bit of plastic moulding. How about doing a high end summary including the "exotic" like lever machines - Pavoni/Gaggia/Elektra or semi commercials ......

Alan, thanks so much for this review. I find it really helps to understand what's going on inside the machine, and even the manuals don't explain what you did. In my experience so far, your analyses of the pros and cons of the various technologies is entirely accurate.

Excellent article, just wish I had read this before throwing away many dollars on different thermoblock machines with different bells and whistles thinking I was getting the bees knees each time. Time to save hard for a Rancilio Silvia which costs $1200 NZ dollars.
