Great to read about Goroka and the uniqueness of Papua New Guinea culture. I lived there with my family for two years and we had a wonderful time, in the process meeting many fascinating people. It was while living in the highlands of PNG that I became very interested in coffee, as it is the main industry and the coffee growing and processing there is such a fascinating business. We made many great friends and contacts in the coffee growing regions and so on our return to New Zealand we have now started our own coffee business! Many thanks to the author for bringing back the great memories of a special and unspoiled part of the world, that is still in our hearts... The coffee from the Eastern Highlands region is absolutely superb and the best in the world - but then I am probably a little biased!

one little guy out in front supporting a huge prosthetic (penis) appendage.
My Dad used to manage a bank in PNG. He tells me this story about some of the locals, who made big wooden penises (big as in 3 feet tall), to sell to tourists. They used to sit outside his bank and sell them.
He told me that one day, he went outside to tell them that they couldn't sit outside the bank and sell penises, and they had to take them away ... when he went outside later in the day, they were still there, but they'd put a t-shirt over the biggest penis ... funny people!
Great coffee though, and it's really good to hear about where it comes from.

I visited Port Moresby, PNG on the way to Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands for about three days in February of 2003. The city isn't as enchanting as the beautiful countryside and unfortunately the poverty and lack of jobs creates a feeling of unrest on the city streets. Due to the "unrest," we were advised by the embassy to pretty much stay in our hotel, the Crown Plaza, for three days until we could finally island hop to Guadalcanal. For those three days, I savored some of the best coffee imaginable and took quite a bit home with me. They didn't serve espresso, but served it via French Press. If you have the sense of adventure and ability to go to this beautiful country, go. The people in the countryside are just as warm as Instaurator says and the coffee is first rate. -- Great article.
