An Exploration of Ethiopian Sidamos by Karen Hamilton As the CoffeeGeek Coffee Discovery Series Kicks off, we have a look at Ethiopian Sidamos supplied by Ecco Caffe, a Santa Rosa, California Roaster. This consumer tasting event took place in September.

A very nice article! I vividly remember thinking many months ago when I first heard about Operation Cherry Red that it deserved to be written about. Opened this article... Voila! I for one hope to read about future tastings like this too...

Surprised there isn't more commentary on this article - given it's been read 22,000 times since posted. I have some questions for CG'ers, for the next article covering the event this Sunday coming up - what did you like and not like about this article - what would you like Karen to focus more on? - would you like more interviews with the attendees, or more personal observations by Karen? - More photos? Less photos? Any other suggestions on what you'd like to see in this continuing column? Three Sidamos were used to make coffee. Coffee was imported by Trabocca. I've seen that name before when it was used to name a coffee. I didn't know Trabocca was an importer. So that's interesting information. (Click for larger image)

I also used PT's Sidamo to make drip coffee at home. I bought this coffee because PT's is a good and famous roaster, I recognize the Sidamo name, and I like the taste description. Other than that I have no clue if this Sidamo coffee tastes better or worse than the three Sidamos written about in the article. Should I be able to tell from the flavor description which one is the better Sidamo? (Click for larger image)

Blue Bottle: famous roaster. Sidamo: well known coffee bean. So I buy it at the Broken Door coffee house in San Jose. Pulls nice shots. I have no clue as to how this Blue Bottle Sidamo is different (source, grade) from PT's or the ones described in the article. The Sidamos I've tried do have a different flavor profile. Flying Goat in Santa Rosa, California. They have a Sidamo on the shelf. I recognize the name. So I buy it. Pulls nice shots. So I got to try another Sidamo. Both Flying Goat and Ecco are in Santa Rosa! I have no idea where Flying Goat got their Sidamo and how it's different from the Ecco Sidamo. So I don't feel the need to go and buy any Ecco Sidamo. Verve in Santa Cruz has a Sidamo. Looks like everyone has a Sidamo. I buy it because Verve is good and I recognize the Sidamo name. How many Sidamos are there and how can I know which ones are the really good ones? It's easy to know what is a great coffee when it comes to COE coffees because these have been scored by judges. When I buy a top scoring COE, like a COE #1, or even a COE #10, I can taste it's quality coffee. But how can I tell which roaster has the better Sidamo? (Click for larger image)

I had this very nice French Press Koratie coffee at Four Barrel. I found out later that this is a Sidamo! They didn't put the Sidamo name on the bag so I didn't know it was a Sidamo. All I know is that this Sidamo was roasted by Stumptown in Portland. I have no idea what sets this Sidamo apart from the others I've tried. So that's confusing. I go to various coffee houses and I see all these Sidamos. I have Sidamos coming out of the wazoo. So to me this article is about just another three Sidamos. It becomes meaningless after a while. I also would like to know how Sidamos are different from other Ethiopian coffees like Harrar, Misty Valley, Yirg (others)?. (Click for larger image)
