Totally agreed.. I live in toronto and would really have loved to go, but I wasn't interested in paying to enter the expo, and I especially wasn't interested in finding my way to the middle of nowhere (I use public transit in the city).

A downtown championship makes much more sense.

looking at the pictures from the Cup Tasters competition, the volunteer who got 3 of 4 was also a Second Cup'er. Go Second Cup.

Finally got to meet CoffeeGeek moderator Craig at the show, was great! He's camera shy (aren't we all), but it was good to hang out with him for a few minutes. I wish I wasn't so busy running everywhere (as per usual).

If you're referring to the woman in black in one of the photos holding up the cup, she got (IIRC) 1 out of 4 right; that said, Pat from 2nd Cup is the Canadian Cup Tasters' Champion, so that's pretty good for the company!

Thanks Mark, it was a pleasure to meet you!
I was at the #259 COAG booth when I finally spotted you at #355 Detour Coffee Roasters booth. I then snuck over & behind your right hand side (you were turned more to the left then) & sat on the last chair right beside you hiding lol!, I could of reached over & tapped ya on the shoulder!! {;-D
Then you spotted my tag & said "Hey Craig!", & great to be able to chat a bit there.

I wish I wasn't so busy running everywhere (as per usual).

For two days too Mark, 5 hrs day 1 & 5 hrs day 2 minimum. At least we walked together over to Social Coffee's booth & I think you got some sampling coffee & you were off again.

Having worked in a prior life at Second Cup for many years with Pat,  he's a great guy, knowledgeable and very passionate about all things coffee. Had the pleasure of going through several cuppings with him and always came out learning something new about coffee.  I recall once cupping a certain bean that we had some 20 bags of, going from "freshest bag", to 1 day old, 2 day old, etc.  Was quite the learning experience to cup and have Pat put words to what we were tasting.

Second Cup gets a bad rap for being "large and corporate", but there is a reason they've been around for 30 years!  I still enjoy a Second Cup each morning and purchase the beans for home use.  Are there "better/fresher" beans available?  Possibly, but I at least have first hand experience with how Cup purchases there beans and the quality control their partners go through to try and provide the most "consistent bean" into the franchised locations.

Congrats Pat, well done my friend!

Meeting Pat was one of the highlights of my trip, no doubt. And we have some future talks about coffee geekery planned, something I am very much looking forward to.

How about mentioning that every one of the finalists was from Western Canada, and the cities each represents?

Rob is from Victoria.
Ben is from Calgary (well he's moved to Edmonton where his wife has started a grad programme at U of A, but he represents P&S, a Calgary roaster and coffeehouse)
Joel is from Calgary.
Jeremy is from Calgary.
5 and 6 are from Vancouver.

I think this speaks for itself, but can I just say- I am so happy to live in Calgary these days.
