Thumbs up My vote: VST filters are definitely delivering a more consistent shot over my 22g/triple basket on a PID-upgraded Rancilio Sylvia. Worth the modest investment. Incremental, but sensible.
Continued thanks to David Schomer (a metrologist, trained at measuring and controlling a process) for opening our eyes to the need to observe and control the key variables in this complex physical and chemical process that we call "making espresso."

I have come to the conclusion that my NS Oscar baskets are not very good and have gotten worse with age. I have been playing more and more with 15-16g doses, do I need to get the Europe-double for these doses as well as the standard double?

My Oscar "project" came with a triple basket thought to be an LM. I stuck it in my Gaggia Coffee and I like what is happening - the extra head room lets me play around with pre-infusion to the benefit of my espresso's taste. I run the pump till it sounds like the water is meeting the grounds, and then I turn the pump off for a couple seconds. When I hit the throttle again I get a bulls eye cone stream down the hole where my spouts would attach if installed. Nice shots.

Tricks aside from doing false pre-infusion, I do not like the results of using my triple LM basket for doses under 19g, anything under that and there is way to much head room. Since I am going to buy the VST basket I am asking if I need to get both the standard and the European double?

You are just like me - someone wanting the best shot possible and posting comments in someone else's thread - I do not consider my method a "trick" and I take offense at what you post.
- good luck with your new baskets but if what I post isn't what you are looking for then maybe you should keep looking - the site is filled with answers and full of threads started by those not too proud to look beyond their own experience for answers.

Sorry you took offense, I am having a rough day with the kids and I am a bit short tempered at this point. I asked a straight forward question in the proper place for people who have used these baskets and might know if the 3 g range of VST baskets are sold in have any fudge room. You did not answer my question. I have been around here long enough to know where to find answers and where to ask questions just thought this would be a good place to ask VST owners the question. Now there are multiple posts that have nothing to do with the topic at hand, LOL.
This is not the thread to debate whether turning the pump on for a few seconds is really true pre infusion or not.
I will see your kids and raise you 12 hours of unaided toil spent in hell before my reply - so much so that "testy" is my new job description. This is not the place to correct your misinformation about pre-infusion methods with the Gaggia. This is a thread about VST baskets. Good luck finding your answer about these baskets.

I would really like to try those filters with my machine once the 7-gramm-basket is out, too. Unfortunately I don't know where to get them in Europe. I could order them at VST, of course, but $99 for shippping seems a little over board. Does any CG know a European shop that sells those filters?
