Anne Lewis Pierce was my great-aunt and a generous spirit. Her great-uncle Benjamin Thompson, eventually Count Rumford, invented the drip coffee pot in order to avoid boiling and ruining coffee for the Bavarian court, army and indigent poor. Anne herself persisted with the Silex for the rest of her life as any dedicated chemist (MS from GWU in 1908) would understand and passed the affectation down through her nieces. She frequently championed coffee in her books, articles and analyses. I pulled a Silex off the stove when just tall enough to reach the handle and bear the scars.

I use a generic Kitchen Aid drip. Not ugly but not pretty, either, but stainless so it at least matches. I am overall pretty lazy when it comes to making it.
