very interesting article. thank you for sharing. i work for Fair Trade USA (leading fair trade certifier in the us) and we have recently begun piloting standards for coffee estates where the premium and benefits go to the farm workers. the idea of these new standards is to improve working conditions for coffee pickers and farm workers while creating fair trade premium (20 cents / pound) for farm workers to implement community development projects chosen democratically by the workers.
we are beginning with a pilot in brazil and it is going very well so far. the workers there have been able to implement already a couple of projects that have improved access to healthcare for workers and their families. we will see how things continue to evolve. we want to have more pilots (probably between 10 to 15 worldwide) to understand how fair trade could help coffee pickers and farm workers. right now fair trade mostly focuses on small farmers and the benefits to farm workers are limited. we believe that is not acceptable but we want to figure out a way to innovate our work to really create impact to farm workers. it is always easier to say than to do and that is why we are piloting standards to be able to improve over time.
it would be interesting to work in panama. so far we are not working with any coffee estate in panama but, Emily, if you/your farm or anybody you know in panama, are interested in this work maybe we can discuss it further. for more information on this work you could check: www.fairtradeforall.com and the general standards we are testing: Click Here (fairtradeusa.org) again, this is just a pilot project and our goal is to learn how we could try supporting coffee pickers and other farm workers through fair trade

Your coffee makes my day, everyday! Excellent selection, great experience in tasting varieties normally not available at stores. My last purchase of the Hawaiian Kona was absolute hit, that coffee is simply amazing, not comparable to anything else I have tried so far.
