Nice coverage, Mark. I have a Gaggia Baby and while the internalsof the two machines (boiler, pump and solenoids) are identical if I understand ti correclty, the wand is not. The wand on the baby ends just below the elbow. I use the 2 hole plastic sleeve provided by WLL (great vendor - I agree with your assessment of them) - they recommend against the frother attachment. I suspect that the foaming capability of the Classic wand is better than what I can do with the Baby. Mark sez "The one important thing: (who the hell drinks tea anyway?)."

I've had a Classic for two years and I'd say your observations are pretty much right on. I cannot compare with other machines except steam toys since I've never used anything else. One positive I'd add to your list is its relatively narrow width (8 inches). This helped me commandeer some of my wife's jealously guarded counter space with room left for the grinder. For me the best results are a cappucino consisting of 1.5 oz in 25 seconds with 3 oz of microfoamed and steamed milk, all in a brown NuovaPoint cappa cup. AAhhh.

My 1st espresso machine was a slightly used (one night) Gaggia labeled Coffee. I think it was purchased in '83 for ~$245.00 USD. Outside of the brushed metal finish & the funky wand it seems to be identical in looks & function. Still sort of works. Needs major league descaling & probably a new pump(erratic pump pressure). The scary foam looks like the junk created by the three local "espresso" cafes around here. Maybe the marketing people think this is what the public expects.

Hi Mark,
Good review - I saw a new classic at a good price (€169) and bought it on the strength of this review.
However I'm really keen to know why the detailed review was never posted. It would seem that even this article has been somewhat pulled from the website....

The boiler of the Gaggia is aluminium only in the top part. The lower part, where the pf attatches to, is chromed brass. One advantage of the external heating-elements is that you wont kill them with an only partly-filled boiler, as is the case with other designs. The Gaggia can be cheated: -switch on brew and steam together, -wait a minute and hit the pump switch, run 150ml of water/steam, -switch off pump -repeat procedure, then switch off steam, -wait two minutes, then brew as usual.

I spent a little over six years with that machine and learned a trick with the production of steam. The machine over heats when steaming, and as a result will stop producing steam after a latte or two (the steam turns to hot air). To overcome this you simply flush water through steam wand (turn on both the steam and the coffee buttons and open up the steam valve) until water comes out with-out steam, but still hot. Then let it heat up again. This goes pretty quickly. This way you can steam all day. Convienient it's not, but it does make it possible to steam for eight. Yon
Hi! I really like this review. I have own my Classic for three years now and I think that this First Look is right on the spot. So I really miss the detailed review!!!
I temp. surf my Classic and that has improve the quality of my shots. I would be glad if anyone can give a detailed description of how they temp. surf the Gaggia. I´m not really sure that i surf at the right point in the "cirkel".
