Macap M5 Dosing Espresso Grinder

We have a first look at a grinder that many consider a geniune contender to the Mazzer Mini's crown as the top end espresso grinder for the home - the Macap M5.

Subject: M5 or M4 - That is the question!?

Thanks, Mark, for the First Look.  I'm very interested in the Macap, but I'm very confused about the model numbers.

You reviewed the M5 grinder, which Macap lists on their web site as being 18.5 inches high (with a 1.3lb. bean hopper), too high to fit under most kitchen cabinets.   See Click Here (www.macap.it)
They don't even list an M4 grinder.

Yet, most of the vendors that now are selling Macaps are selling the M4, which they claim are 17" high (also with a 1.3 lb. bean hopper).  See Chris at http://www.chriscoffee.com/products/home/grinders/macap and 1st-line at http://www.1st-line.com/machines/home_mod/macap/M4.htm.  Vanellis is even more confusing, referring to the same grinder as both the M4 and M5, but mentioning that with the "optional" hopper it stands only 17" high.

My question is:  is the M4 grinder just the M5 with a shorter hopper, or is there some feature/performance difference between the two?

I'm trying to decide on whether to get one of these or a Mazzer and would appreciate the help.

Michael

Great First look.

I'm interested in the MC5, doserless Macap grinder.

Can't wait to see some vendors carry those.

Mark, thanks for the 1st look.  The MazzerMini has some real serious competition if the M5 has the durability of the Mazzers, if the stepped grind adjustment maintains a high level of precision and if the user can adapt or doesn't care for lack of fine grind adjustment.  Hopefully this grinder will be equal or better than the Mini.  At ~$350 msrp more people will be able to experience the benefits of a high quality grinder.

Hi Folks. Thanks for the feedback. It's very much appreciated :)

Re the M4 - M5 thing. I have an email in to Antonio at Macap in Italy about the subject.

But it may have to wait until September to get a response.... Italy kinda shuts down in August.

Nice first look.  No buyers remorse yet with my mini:D.  Would be nice to have the brake on the motor, but still prefer stepless.  Did you notice any problem with  play in the threads when going back and forth?(I think I've read some rocky users have noticed a little).
