Cheap easy way to test the waters and learn the basics of coffee roasting.

I picked up the exact popper recommended here.  I think I've had one roasting go exactly how it was outlined.  Every other attempt has barely managed to get into first crack...many never got to that point even after 12 minutes in the popper.  I've varied the amount of beans to not quite 2/3 cup and as little as being able to see the top of the vents in the popper.  The one time I knew it performed as it should it started the first crack at about 2 1/2 minutes, best guess was 2-3 cracks per second, another minute later it starts the second crack, not quite as high pitched as the first crack and noticeably more rapid.  I had consistent darkness over the entire surface area of the bean and all beans were the same color.  My previous attempts left the beans with a very mottled appearance, some had dark spots but with light tan coloring also.  If this is how it's going to be I'll just continue buying beans from coffeefool...money is not an object for me.

Tried the bypass...ran for about 3 minutes

I found that I can't roast any more than about a quarter of a cup in mine, beyond that I get the same results as you.  However, if money isn't an object for you, there are several great home roasters available.  The popper doesn't seem right for you.

I am sipping my first cup of home roast using this method. I can not stop drinking it! I roasted it a little lighter than I like and did not put enough in the popper, so it took about 12 minutes. I just roasted a second batch and put enough so that the beans were not swirling, just jumping. First crack 4 min, 2nd 7 min. They look perfect, stopped the roast just as the beans really began to smoke, about 30 sec after 2nd crack. I can not wait to brew it tomorrow morning.

I've been scouring the west side of Vancouver (BC) looking for an appropriate thermometer - without any luck thus far.  Mark, where in Van did you buy the thermometer you're using in the photos?

Got a popper at Target for  $14.00 I've roasted twice now and left the plastic lid on both times and stirred through the butter cup hole a bit, but left the lid on with buttercup hole open about 30 sec. total. Dramatically lower times than the guide. With 15 sec. warmup, 5:15 total was espresso. 4:00 total was light city (I think).  Might try leaving the lid off in the beginning as the guide suggests. Apparently this really affects roasting times. I think 7-8 minutes with the lid on all the time and I'd have a fire.

Now it's' May 31. Quite a learning curve to this. I roast outside in Los Angeles, (hot), and the weather was totally the cause of my short roast times. It's cooled off 20 degrees and I'm up to 7 to 9 minutes now.  I was trying to control the roast by timing everything to the second. But if you're roasting outside there's a lot of eyeballing to doing this. Hard to imagine that the weather makes that much of a difference inside an almost totally enclosed dome near 450 degrees...but it does!

Now it's Sept. 30. Finally think I know what I'm doing. Roasting Outside temp drastically affects roast times, much more than bean type. Bought a 2nd popper exactly like the first. Roast times on this one take 25% longer than original popper.

Hello everyone.  Nice informative site with helpful members.  I'm new to the home roasting, custom coffee endeavour.  Always drank folgers, preground, drip brewer.  =)  Did my share of research & decided to start this as a new & interesting hobby.  What I've bought is:

Heard the quality is gonna be awesome.  =)   Any suggestions on the level of roast for my 1st ever attempt?  Heard one suggestion for light city & another for full city so as to preserve the lighter notes of this particular coffee.  The beans, as related are, thouroughly inspected.  Can't find one bad bean.  Be ready to try my hand at this in the next few days, when everything arrives.
