Weird about the comments about needing weights - I saw masses in the article, but I automatically convert ml into g in my head anyway - to me they are synonymous (and they roughly are in the metric system).
To those looking for masses (or weights) - 1g ~ 1ml of water.
230ml H2O ~ 230g H2O. Gotta love the metric system. :-) The density of water is less near boiling (about 4% less) but it's close enough.
If you REALLY gotta have oz (dry weight, like on a scale), divide grams by 28.4. It also works for converting ml to g to fluid oz, but the technical conversion 29.6ml per fluid oz. Use either, you'll only be off by 4% - but your're gonna be off by around that much when you heat your water anyway if you're using volumes.
Personally, I just use the metric system and always back convert volumes if I'm given fluid oz.
It seems stupid as heck, but 1 fluid oz of water actually weighs 1.043 dry or "avoirdupois" ounces. Gotta hate the "standard" measurement system. >:-(

Posted Sat Aug 6, 2011, 1:45am Subject: Re: Aeropress Cold Brew Coffee
Steve - only reason why I'm not replying is I have written a big opinion article about the whole cold / iced / slow brew coffee thing. Letting my plan out of the bag a bit here, but
- posting four cold coffee methods (two more to come - I have a stumble on the Vietnamese Coffee article, which is next) - once the four are posted, posting an op/ed piece on cold brew coffee and some current trends.
A lot of what you posted is actually stuff I write about in the op/ed piece.
My technique at work is to brew concentrate into the most massive mug in the community cupboard, using it as a heat sink to cool the brew substantially. I then pour it in my insulated cup (usually), then, and ice and dairy it as wished.
The reason we need to pre-heat our nice ceramic mugs is the same reason a cool one is great for prepping such brew for drinking cold!
The Coava is the best metal filter I've used with the Aero. Not as good as poly -- but darned close. There's a constraint method I want to implement with the darned thing, but haven't gotten around to a mod/fab to help me do that yet. Doggonit life's too busy.
Has anyone tried adding sugar to the ground coffee in the AP (or, I suppose for any brewing method)? I made one of these AP iced coffees today and added a teaspoon of raw granular sugar to the grounds before pouring in the 90C water. Didn't have to worry about dissolution in cold water and I thought it tasted good, but is there any drawback to doing it this way?
So this write-up pushed me over the edge and I bought my first Aeropress from Venia Coffee (first time buying from them, but they had it to me next day, so just giving them a public thumbs up). Been wanting to buy one for awhile, so this gave me a good enough reason to jump on it. Aside from my wife being a little un-excited to have another coffee toy in the kitchen, she wasn't complaining after i figured out how to use it properly. Again, great write up.
Anyone have a favorite roast style in the Aeropress for iced? Always looking to try something new.
