CoffeeGeek takes a look at what could very well be the best espresso brewing machine under $2,500 (once you forget about steaming). See what we have to say about the Zaffiro.

I don't own the zaffiro, but Paul Haddon, who's also a coffeegeek user was kind enough to demonstrate his (240v) Zaffiro for me, and the steaming wait was over 1:30, so I don't think you can just blame the 110v power for the wait. More likely to be the result of all that water in the boiler - great for temperature stability - meaning it takes a long time to cool down when making espresso, but also a long time to heat up for steam.

Great review, Mark. Minor quibble is with the statement that only the LM and Conti have larger dedicated brew boilers: the Techno's is 1.4 liters, with concomitant stability.
Hi David. I didn't mention the Techno, because my understanding is the model isn't currently being manufactured - they have it on "hold' until this fall because of some production problems; again, this was my information as gleaned from the SCAA show in Boston. If this information is incorrect and the machine is being made today, and shipping today, I'll make the edit change.
Loved your review, Mark. I too, own a 240V version and noticed the same delay in getting ready to steam... Picked up some good suggestions, like bleeding false pressure when flicking the steam switch (I had read about bleeding for other machines, didn't think it mattered here. Just one question - until now, I had been backflushing after every session... apparently overkill?
Yeah, I think backflushing after every shot is overkill, and can lead to premature deterioration in the gaskets and plumbing inside the machine. Doing the "portafilter wiggle" should be more than sufficient between shots.
Ok, thanks. I'll change my habits to do just the "portafilter wiggle". Just for clarification, I was doing the backflushing after every session with plain water only.

Finally, the detailed review! Your first look prompted my Zaffiro purchase, and never was a great espresso made easier. I'll keep a laminated copy of the cogent parts of your review close to The Machine. Absolutely a great review of a great _espresso_ machine. ( If I want milk, I'll drink milk.)
