I found a website that had some interesting information on the history of coffee in New Orleans.  It has 5 different chapters so make sure to check each one out.  The pictures are fascinating too.

Civil War.

Port of New Orleans.

Chicory used as filler; still used today in coffee drinks

------------------------------ ------------------------------

Shift to today...

Cafe du Monde in N'awlins: some of the most over-rated, god-awful turpentine-tasting yuk I have ever imbibed (and an absolutely filthy establishment, to boot). Still you 'gotta' go there at least once.

The doughy beignets will add poundage to even the skinniest of arses.

But that's the Crescent City for you; over-rated in a lot of respects...

...and a hell of a lot of fun in other ways- e.g.  for several days each year in April/May when the city hosts its Heritage Jazz Festival and the music... flows. That's a great time.

Awesome link!  Thanks for sharing.  The Louisiana State Museum does a great job with everything they undertake.  While some don't seem to appreciate the role of New Orleans in coffee's history, it is eye-opening to realize just how much of our appreciation and understanding of coffee has been shaped by the decades of trade there.

The audio about cupping was cool - what a time-honored method for proofing coffee samples!

Thanks again for your post!

It's funny.  I can't make a trip to New Orleans without going to Cafe du Monde and having 3 beignets and a Cafe au Lait.  I love watching my three year old enjoy powdered sugar, watching the pigeons scavenge for scraps and getting to hear some street musicians play their songs.  Somebody must like chicory because Sweet Maria's sells the root.
