Alan was very, very kind to send me something special for the Aeropress. Two custom made, photo etched metal filters with very specific micron, er fraction of an inch sizes.
Filter a: 0.015" spacing between holes, 0.005" hole sizes Filter b: 0.020" spacing between holes, 0.010" hole sizes
For comparison, Alan wrote that espresso baskets typically have about 0.06 spacking between holes, and holes sized at 0.015", but (imo), wildly different sizes. These photoetched holes are exactly spaced and sized.... something, imo, the espresso industry could learn a thing or two from (though I don't think you can photo etch metal that's too thick?).
Anyway,
It was late in the day when I got them, and I'm totally caffeinated out doing a major cupping of the CoE brasils today, but I was dying to try them... and I gave each a shot.
My very first attempt with the larger hole filer (the 0.01 mm size holes) resulted in brewed coloured water just gushing out. Don't read anything into this - it's obvious that my grind choice and setup wasn't set to this.
But my second attempt, with the smaller hole 0.005 mm holes using the KA Proline set to (factory setting) 6.5 on the dial, measuring out 22g of George Howell's last bit of the Tegu Kenya (which I was thinking must be dead by now - the bag's been here almost 15 days, opened all that time); was spectacular.
MASSIVE, and I mean massive blueberry / blackberry notes, a nice acidity, and a rounded out light body finish on the coffee.
Alan's not a fan of these filters; he has concerns about LDL cholesterol (which I don't share, but everyone's opinion is important), and this is why he's not actively marketing these filters at this time. But in one cup - my very first (well second) use of these filters, I got something that I bet would stand up to the Clover, and definitely shine against press and vac pots. The thing is, I tried the Tegu two days ago in a press and was disapointed that the more delicate blue / blackberry notes seemed gone. And now they're back.
I would assume that without the paper, more oils would get into the brew, and thus, more flavor and nuance. I hope Mark responds to your very good question. Barry

Aeropress.. with a metal filter = Jason would be a buying customer, and an Aeropress advocate.
One of my pet-peeves with paper filters is that the paper DOES tend to absorb many of the coffee oils, and thus, much of the body, flavor, and mouthfeel. The texture is typically a bit more flat with a paper filter.. to me, anyway.

And a +1 for you,Jason--I agree entirely. The Aeropress is excellent, but I suspect the mesh filters would make it even better, and overcome some of the objections concerning "blandness" that some have made. Alan--are you listening? Regards, Barry
