My partner recently announced that Melitta brand premium ground coffee is Europe's best and that American roasts , especially Green Mountain (in Vermont) are WalMart quality. I contend that the Melitta brew is average with little character and leaves an ash aftertaste. We use a gold filter and have a good braun coffemaker, so how should I respond to her claim to coffee's higher ground?

I don't think there is a good way to respond to this or "defend" anything. It's simply not an apples vs. apples situation. Granted, most of us in this forum are grinding are own (in many cases folks are also blending and roasting their own!). Even when assessing two brands of ground coffee that are similar blends, the depth and style of roast imparts different characteristics and to further compund the problem, tastes vary. I like a robust relatively dark roasted coffee as my regular cuppa joe and I like a lighter roasted espresso blend. Does that make what I like "better"? Of course not.
Is it possible that she's getting her information direct from Melitta? Their filter package makes the claim that "Melitta Coffee....(is).. judged Best Coffee in America by the American Tasting Institute." Who the heck are they? Ohhhh.... they're the same folks who also awarded Melitta the Four Star Gold medal for "Best Filters America".
Back to reality (my highly subjective and biased version of it). I've never been able to judge the variables in prep method for Green Mountain coffee but have always found it to be far superior to Starbucks. OTOH, last time I tried it I didn't think it was as good as it had been several years prior.

Arguing about the best tasting ground coffee is like arguing about the best tasting stale bread or flat beer; pointless.
If you want to know what coffee tastes like, buy a grinder, buy fresh roast coffee (less than three weeks old, preferably less than ten days old), and grind the beans immediately before using them.
I'm sorry I'm sounding like a snob. I'm not; it's just that the sellers of canned coffee have been lying to the public for so long, that they've forgotten the obvious: roasted beans go stale in a few weeks, gound coffee goes stale in a few hours.

I have some very bad news for your partner. Melitta coffee is not European. It may be a European style of coffee, but it is very American.
Melitta has a very large roasting plant in New Jersey. Nice plant too. Does all the canning and everything. Melitta also uses a relatively poor grade of green coffee too.
I think your partner just like the roast style of the Melitta coffee. The roast is actually OK, On the right and good quality coffee,it would taste a lot better.
