Subject: Help a Canadian relive a "Small World Coffee" memory...

A couple of years ago, during a business trip to NJ/NY I ended up in Princeton and bought some fresh-roasted beans from "Small World Coffee" (Grumpy Monkey or Small World Blend, forget which).

Man, my luggage has never smelled so good!  My overnighter in NYC was spent trying sleep with the strong smell of that excellent coffee in my room.  I swear I was ready to eat the beans whole.

Anyway, I brought the beans home and the coffee lived up to it's promise.  The beans lasted well for a couple of weeks before flattening a bit.

I'd love to get coffee of that quality again, but can't find it where I live (Ottawa).  I'm convinced it was a combination of the bean quality, the blend, the roaster's skill and most of all the freshness of the roast -- any of these factors gone and the experience would have been so-so.

Since I'm a cheap and overtaxed (and over-dutied) Canadian I'd like to avoid constantly ordering small batches from NJ just for the fresh roasting, so here are my questions:

  • Is anybody familiar with the "Small World" blends and what they think are in them?  Are they appropriate for espresso as well as vac/drip/press?
  • Is there an internet/mail/phone order place in Canada that roasts beans and ships them out that day - but does so in per-lb increments (I'm the only coffee consumer at home, buying 5 lb bags at a time negates the "fresh-roast")
  • Any good fresh-roasting places in Ottawa?
  • How can I convince my wife to get a roaster? :-)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know I'm answering this pretty late, but they do have a web site and fast mail order beans.

Basic Descriptions are here, and I'm sure they would answer a mail if you wrote.

Unfortunately, I can't help you with the last two.

No probs with the late reply!

Yeah, I noticed you could now order Small World Coffee online (back when I was originally poking around, they didn't have that option).  Not sure if it's international or how that might slow things up, but I'll likely give it a shot in the next few months once the Xmas credit cards are paid off.

Try birdsandbeans in toronto or there is a place in Montreal Terra I belive.
Both are on the net & I've bought green beans from b&b's- there are very nice there.
I don't really know what small world coffes are .
Good luck in your hunt!

I heard a rumour that birdsandbeans in Toronto had ceased trading, but don't know if this is a fact.

Hi Ian,

I just got off the phone a moment ago, & that's false! They're having an issue with their ISP & are temporarily down I was told & this will be rectified.

Absolute nonsense - in fact, we are alive and well and have just opened our own retail store/cafe at the Roastery. This morning our web hosting company has had problems because their lines have been turned off due to an error on the part of the phone company. Since it is THE biggest phone company in Canada, they are not moving too quickly to correct the problem. We hope to be back online later today. Please feel free to call us on our toll free line 1-866-332-4737 if you need to place an order.

Craig - thanks for the heads up.

Ian - where did you hear the rumour? Things like this can do serious damage and I'd like to stop the rumour.

Thanks David

Glad to hear it!

I'd like to stop the rumour.

I think you just have.

Best of luck with the latest venture.

Cheers

Ian
