How regularly can I have coffee without becoming addicted to the caffeine?

Is one day a week off enough to keep away the physical addiction? What about 2 days, or 3 days? Any thoughts?

How long does it take to develop the physical addition. A month a daily consumption, 3 months?

If any one as any info, or can point me toward any, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks, Merlynn

Here's a link to some information concerning coffee and its health effects:

http://www.coffeescience.org/other.html

Mind you, it was created by the National Coffee Association, so I would probably read it with a grain of salt :-)

Not that we need more excuses to increase consumption of this stuff ....

Hi Merlynn,

it very much depends on your physical constitution.
Tall people like me (2m/6'6") with a low blood pressure get used to caffeine quickly. I am drinking 1-6 doubles a day. If I stop apruptly, I will have headaches for a few days starting mid day. A single a day is enough to keep them away. (Tested during my last tooth extraction ;-()
I can go down to zero by reducing my daily intake to a cup or so for a few days. Tested this during photo safaris where I stuck to roibos tee that doesn't have any caffeine.

cheers
afx

Thanks for the responses.

I have always had a very low tolerance for caffeine. A little goes a long way with me. Through college, the occasional Mountain Dew was for 'medicinal purposes only.' The only caffeine I consume is through coffee - which I love.

I really want to increase my coffee consumption because I enjoy it, but not to the point of experiencing a withdrawal if I don't get it. Currently, a big caffeine week means I drink coffee 3 - 4 days a week.  But as the coffee gets better - which I credit to this site - the more I want to drink!

My Bodum Santos gets delivered today. It will be my first time to play with a vac pot. I'm really looking forward to it.

Coffee is a very small vice; I would not worry much about being addicted to caffeine. I mean we are all addicted to certain fundamental things, breathing and eating is two. We don’t avoid going into the city because the air is not as clean as the country, and there are plenty of foods we should all avoid, but do we?

Drink your coffee because there are few guaranties in life, and if you make the cup of coffee yourself you can guarantee that it will be to you liking.

I agree that coffee is a very small vice. I'm not even sure vice is the right word in this day and age...

Any links to negative health impact I've seen have been tenuous at best. For me it is more a mental thing, and knowing myself. I wouldn't enjoy my coffee as much if I had to have it to prevent a headache.  At that point it starts to become more of a necessity, and that ruins the fun for me.(Go ahead, call me crazy - my husband does all the time.)

I am in no way trying to pass judgement on other people's coffee consumption. I don't think there's anything wrong with it. If the mental thing didn't trip me up, I'd be drinking it all the time. I honestly believe we are exposed to far worse things every day than a little caffeine.

I'm just trying to keep coffee the fun and romantic experience it is for me. (Once again, you can call me crazy...)

I have seen studies citing beneficial side effects of caffeine use.  It has been shown to improve short-term memory, boost cardiovascular performance, and I find it reduces the likelihood and intensity of an exercise-induced asthma attach, especially in cold weather.    It also makes me far more tollerable in the morning.

Not to say that being a caffeine addict is a good thing, but it sure beats a pesky crack habit.

Hey! Don't go knocking that crack habit until you have tried it!

Personally, I am addicted to eating. I find that I start jonsen' for food if I go a day or so without eating.

Those habits are nasty!
