Subject: Selling Green Beans at a Local Market

Hey Everyone -
I live in Chicago, and of course, I roast my own coffee. I have bought from Sweet Maria and online merchants, but for some known and some undefinable reasons, I prefer to buy my beans in-person from vendors. Maybe it is the personal relationships, or the hunt. Though there are plenty of brick-and-mortar stores that sell green beans (from coffee shops to Ethiopian markets to Whole Foods), the variety is lackluster. I would like to approach it as a means to supply current enthusiasts as well as to evangelize the hobby. I thought I could plop down at a market once a week (Maxwell Street in Chicago comes to mind) or persuade one of the Farmer's Markets with a flexible mission statement. Has anyone considered this or tried this? Is this is a bad idea? Sometimes I can't distinguish what I think others would appreciate from what I would enjoy. Happy Roasting,
Brian

Terrible idea! Everyone should buy their coffee from a professional roaster! Um, kidding. I think it's a cool idea but you may have trouble finding enough customers. Maybe you could stock Whirley Poppers or something inexpensive that people could try home roasting with.

South Texas? Can you roast beans on a hot sidewalk down there?

I like the idea of offering the Whirley Pop, or somehow locating a bunch of Poppery II's. I would probably have to find a way to demonstrate on location because I find people are skeptical of home roasting.

Been using my Whirlypop for two years with SweetMarias, Marlton and Caracollilo greenies and the final brew tastes excellent!  Good luck on your roasting.

EDIT: the best brew arises from using the Melitta Unbleached filters along with a Melitta fiter cone and NOT THE SWISSGOLD.  The Melitta setup retains the brew in the cone for a  longer time resulting in a brew that's way more full bodied than all of the rest of the gizmos, gadgets and stuff.

Best,
-T
