Well, I live in the island of Java, so aside from what Wikipedia said about the first time the Dutch mass produced coffee in Javanese plantations back in 17th century to distribute to all over the known world, I can't relate how come the 'java' (or 'Java'?) name still sticks ever since.

Anyone might share some alternative explanations?

For the reasons you explained arabica coffee is sometimes still called Java beans.

Ah, I guess the use of 'java' is that universal. Btw, if I'm not mistaken, Pope Clement VIII is the one who quoted that Satan drink. According to Wikipedia, at least.

Well, I've found both, Popes Clement VII and Clement VIII as originators of this sentence. But after some research I think you're right. Thanks for the information.

Another strange colloquialism is the word mocha for a chocolate related drink.

The port of Mokha in Yemen is also one of the earliest places to export coffee.  In fact the aforementioned Java and Mocha make the original blend, Mocha-Java.

Somewhere Mocha came to mean a coffee drink with a chocolate component.

As for Java meaning coffee, this is standard, many people will refer to coffee by the origin and with Java being a major and very early exporter, the word stuck.
