Another benefit of this is that you can weigh for resultant brew volume and not water applied. If you don't have a stand, you put all of your gear on the scale, tare it, and then start adding water. The scale shows you only how much water you've added, but does not tell you how much coffee that gets you. In other words, you're weighing water before brewing. Some stays behind in the coffee, so that doesn't translate directly to the output volume.
If you have a stand like this, you can weigh the output directly. I'll leave you to determine the advantages/disadvantages, but it's useful information you couldn't otherwise obtain. At retail, I think it's necessary, because people are still buying a "12oz" coffee, not "however big a coffee is after you start with 12oz of water".
For the price, why not try your hand at making one, if for nothing else than another variable to measure?
