Bingo. If I'm talking to another nerd, then I go into specifics about acidity, clarity, body, mouthfeel, and so on. But to a more pedestrian coffee drinker (like the guy in the office next to me, who thought he was "hard-core" because he uses a press at home) I start with what he knows and work toward what he doesn't. That's because I like explaining this stuff to people who seem genuinely curious, on the off chance that I might convince them that, with a modicum of effort, they could really improve their coffee and enjoy it more. It's not about some esoteric knowledge I have, so I don't talk over his head with cupping-chart terminology.

Americano - "it's kind of like French Press."

After reading this far, I tend to agree with the non-OP side. But having said that, I'm afraid I'm about to fall into a third camp and the opposite extreme. I recently demoed a Bunn Trifecta MB and was so impressed that I ordered one. If someone asks me to describe what the brew compares to, I know they'll be annoyed when I reply, "It's almost exactly like another Trifecta."
