I want to publicly apologize to Alan Adler, inventor of the Aeropress, for an incident that occurred back in 2009.
A few of you may remember a somewhat technical discussion about measuring extraction yields in Aeropress coffee. Alan offered a measurement method that was different from the standard one, and generally more favorable to Aeropress methods. I took him to task (somewhat rudely I recall) for changing the measurement protocol simply to make his invention look better.
Well, three years later it seems likely that Alan's measurement method was essentially correct, and I was quite mistaken.
In a recent lecture at the Nordic Barista Cup, coffee inventor Vince Fedele from VST introduced the latest versions of his software that include (among many other things) "full immersion" concepts that seem similar to what Alan proposed. And on this forum, Steve "Netphilosopher" Padilla has recently recounted laborious home experiments that also appear to support some of Alan's ideas.
It is the nature of this sort of research that few conclusions are final and few methods are totally ironclad. But the evidence seems quite strong at this point.
So again, to Alan I offer a sincere apology for my harsh criticism and narrow-mindedness.

But aren't you both half right?
As I recall the discussion was about calculating extraction without regard to brew method. Or Alan did you say your method only applied to the Aeropress/full immersion brew method?

To be honest, I'm not sure; I haven't read that part of the thread since 2009. I really have no desire to reread it now, because it's not something that brings back fond memories.
Since you ask, however, my recollection is this: Alan used what we would now call an "immersion-style calculation" to show his Aeropress (used according to his instructions) extracted coffee in more or less a "normal" range (18-22%). I challenged his claim, but I was using the conventional "drip" calculations which most people now believe are inappropriate for immersion coffee (eg, Aeropress, French press, vac pot, etc).
Without getting into too much detail, I believe Alan was essentially correct. My criticism was off the mark.
