Here is my understanding of the subject.
They claim that the digestive juices does something to the bean. That's hogwash.
The civets in the wild naturally will eat coffee cherries, but the theory is that they only ate the RIPEST cherries, thus the beans that they passed were at their absolute peak.
When people realized they could make money selling this, they started force-feeding civets cherries. It didn't matter if they were ripe or not any more. They would smear bananas over unripe cherries to convince the civet to eat them.
As far as I am concerned, the idea that the digestive juices do anything to the coffee was a lie they made up to justify the practice and the price.
Take a stand. Don't buy Kopi Luwak. It's low-grade coffee passed through a cat's butt hole sold at $300/lb. Talk about a rip off.

It's true that the commercial production of Kopi Luwak is cruel to civet cats, because thee animals are forced eat large amounts of coffee berries and therefore suffer from malnutrition, but there are other exclusive coffees as well like Black Ivory, for example. I'm not sure what orduction does to the elephants though.
Would you eat peanuts that passed through an elephants colon? Roasted afterward maybe? What would the trademark be, Mr. Peanut with an elephant trunk?

As to Esmerelda - I found it just as big a waste of money - it was too tea like for me. If I want tea I'll make tea. I've heard several roasters of the high end Geisha's say you love 'em or hate 'em and there is no middle point.
Susan, the new crop of Geisha coming out of Colombia that Intelli is roasting might be the one for you to try. The price-point is staggering, but the cup has very distinct, individual influences from both the growing region and cultivar. It's not nearly as tea-like as the Esmerelda that I've had.

I've heard the Don Pachi, even though it is still from Panama, is not as tea like as Esmeralda (and less expensive) but I still haven't been able to make my self try it.
If Intelli wasn't an hour away, I might find out when they were serving it and go over there, because I'll pay for a cup, even at the cost that a cup of it makes. And I'm secure enough, that for a treat, price point is not an issue anymore.
