The problem with most commercial toothpastes, around 99%, is an ingredient called Sodium Lauryl Sulphate. It will totally destroy any pleasure of food eaten after brushing, if this stuff is part of the mix.
I used to sell berries years ago at the local farmers market, and provided samples to taste. I knew the berries were good tasting and sweet. I had one person take a sample. She gave me the funniest look and couldn't wait to spit it out. I asked her if she had recently brushed her teeth and she said yes. At the beginning of that season, I had just gone out early in the morning to pick. I started out with sampling off the bush and of course it was just after brushing. I couldn't believe how nasty something could taste. and found out later about the toothpaste connection. So at least I had some experience with the issue to relate with the problem the customer had with odd flavors.
Many toothpastes you find at the health food/natural food stores have totally different ingredient lists, so I'd suggest you look there if you want to get away from these funny ingredients.

I find that a combination of salty and Umami food neutralizes nicely. Fortunately there is a lot of breakfast foods that fall into that category. Alternately, try cheese puffs. I know it sounds unlikely, but try it because it works well.
