Subject: Where is the BEST Coffee in South East Asia?

Greetings,

I'm new to this forum.

I'm based in Bangkok, Thailand but I've been traveling around South East Asia for the past year.

Now I am searching for the best coffee in this region. I know there are several countries out here world famous for their coffee production.

I've always loved coffee but I'm far from a connoisseur. Learning as I go...

I loved the coffee in Vietnam! I will buy some when I return.

Also, I'm heading to Laos in a few weeks.

Also on my radar is Indonesia and the Philippines.

I'm looking to buy some beans for myself and to mail to family as a gift back in the US.

Any info or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

if you're going to Indonesia, their specialty of coffees are 'kopi luwak' (the most expensive coffee in the world) and 'kopi Mandailing'. While if you're going to the Philippines, they are known for their Arabica, Liberica (Barako), Excelsa and Robusta coffees. But the most famous in the Philippines is the Liberika or the "Kapeng Barako'.

Please don't buy/drink/recommend Kopi Luwak coffee. It's production is marred by severely unethical practices. See this article:

In addition to avoiding Kopi, (please by all means do avoid) do not buy roasted coffee. It will be stale long before it gets used, likely long before it was sold to you. Roasted coffee is only good for a few weeks from the DAY IT WAS ROASTED so the only way to "keep" what you are going to buy is to buy it green and roast it yourself.

Thank you for the information, yes it is now being unethically produced but how come it's still the most expensive coffee in the world? Indonesia is famed for this coffee whether it has news of producing it unethically. so if a person went to Indonesia, they still recommend Kopi Luwak, i really don't know why.
