How do those that have tried it like it? I think it's actually pretty good, from what I've had of it. It gives it a little bit of a gingery-type flavor, which I like in the small amount it gives it.

I grew up on coffee w/ chicory in New Orleans. Somehow, nothing tastes quite the same as Cafe du Monde coffee au lait on a crisp Autumn evening. But folks in the Crecent City would say it ain't coffee unless it has chickory in it! If I buy coffee in the store (which is very rare) I usually buy Louzianne Coffee & Chickory in the red vacuum pack. If I could roast coffee & chickory that good myself, I would!
There are several theories about how the coffee & chickory combination got started. For those who might not know, it is the root of the endive plant and has been used as an additive to coffee for a couple of hundred years. I have been told two different stories about why it is there - first is that it was added as a "filler" when coffee was scarce. In fact I am told that for a while it was not added to coffee in New Orleans, but re-introduced during the depression. So, there might be some truth to that. The other story is that it was added to remove any bitter aftertaste that dark roasted coffee might have. Since most New Orleans coffee is dark roast, or French Roast, that also would make sense. Of course, that might say something about the source and quality of the beans they were using back then, too.
Forget Seattle - New Orleans has as much history wrapped around its coffee and French Market as it does Mardi Gras. Sadly, the French Market is a fraction of what it was when I was a kid (ten years ago?:) ) But, coffee and bignets haven't changed in 100 years!

I do enjoy chicory in my coffee on occasion. I do keep ground chickory in a jar in the fridge.
There is a funny story about it. One day my son came over and wanted a cup of coffee. He brewed himself a cup. He tried it, spit it out, and said this coffee is crap. I had him show me what he used, then informed him that his dissatifacation stemed from the fact the it wasn't coffee that he put into the press-pot.

When I was a medical student in France over 20 years ago, I was subjected to coffee cut with chicory. It wasn't served in the cafes but people did this at home to save money. The French who did this actually liked it. Needless to say I thought it was a complete turn off. Folgers instant is better.

I think its an aquired taste like scotch whiskey. When I first encountered it in New Orleans 20 years ago, my reaction was like Marvins, I could not drink it. Bit after a couple hundred trips to new Orleans in the last 20 years, the flavor is sort of like running into an old friend. I do enjoy a cup with chicory now and again. I don't think I would want to drink it that way all the time though.

I like chicory. I have always liked it ever since I tried it. I've been considering getting some. Any suggestions for a coffee blend that will stand up well to a french roast for chicory? I also believe I will be trying this: "My best offering (so far): the Marquis".

I first encountered this kind of coffee living in Oklahoma with my grandparents and going to college. I forgot the exact brand, but it was a local brand and they cut the coffee with chicory. It seemed OK to me, though a bit of the dark roasted side overall. I brewed it weak back then, though.
I recently roasted some of my own coffee (fairly dark) and mixed in some chicory from Sweet Marias. The coffee tasted peppery on it's own, but with milk and sugar it was fairly good, I'd say it's much better than the usual French roast.
Then again, I have drank Celestial Seasonings herbal teas, and they often use chicory. Bengal Spice, for instance, is a good chicory chai. Good to drink if you want to catch some zzz's at night (now days I preffer Rooibos tea).
