Mine too - except for just a couple of good shops... (That's why most of the espresso I drink is at home)
And Eric - maybe consider making continued efforts to get hired at a place where the ownership cares a bit more about the espresso or at least is willing to learn. Wilderness Perk may have it's charm.
Another thing you could try is to offer to bring your small setup in to the shop on your own time and then pull a few CodeBrown shots after work (or before opening) for them and let them try it out.
It's possible that a case could be made for working to attract some of the true coffee afficianado types that surely reside in the posh area of the store location. As we all know, it really would not increace the cost much for the shop to make great shots...

Jon, you've got me figured out. The owners have no clue I've been helping them find burrs for one of their grinders just for that purpose :-). I'm hoping Jason and they can strike a deal so the coffee is always fresh, never more than 2 or 3 days old, because after about the 5th day, his espresso goes extremely downhill. The problem would be, however, that it would be a pain to have one espresso dealer, and one coffee dealer, since Jason doesn't deal with flavored coffees. Also, Jason doesn' t make his blend in decaf.
I really like working at Wilderness Perk though, since it's never busy and I can do homework and read during work.
I hope you've done it for them? I remember the first time I cleaned the screens at work for the first time. It had never been done, although I imagine they've been replaced once or twice. Completely clogged with solid coffee aside from one or two holes. Most of the water was squeezed out the sides of the screens (hence why I cleaned them!). Scrubbing was useless so I grabbed some tongs and held the screens over the stove flames in the kitchen to burninate all the peasants... err, coffee...
Needless to say it's pretty nasty if those things don't get cleaned.

...when I get on a rant about how I can't take stale low-grade coffee and the person I'm talking to says "I completely agree, I never drink anything but Tim Hortons". For those of you who don't know, Tim Hortons is a fast food style coffee chain which doesn't even have a grinder in their stores (they have packages of pre-ground probably crappy grade robusta coffee - I asked a PBTC once and they didn't know what robusta or arabica were). Anyways, they advertize "Always fresh" because they throw out their sitting-on-a-burner coffee after about 10 minutes of being brewed.
There's a lot of pet peeves to do with working as a barista. I'm really enjoying just making espresso at home now. I'm well known with my friends as making the best coffee in town, so they won't try to tell me how to make it. The options I give people for drinking coffee in my house are: Decaf or Caffeinated, and with sugar, vanilla, or plain. I make everyone 6oz lattes, and I refuse to use skim milk. I can do that because I'm not charging them.

When someone who stares blankly at the menu for a few minuetes, then asks for a french vanilla cappuccino expecting something similair to a powdered gas station coffee.

When you have to spend 10 minutes cleaning your burr grinder every time you use it.
When you think the thermal pot on your drip maker is placed under said apperatus securley and it starts spewing grounds and hot water all over your counter top.
When you accidentally make the coffee too strong and it gives you the runs at the worst time i.e. traffic, meeting, church etc...
