Hi,

I am looking to buy a BBQ roasting drum, preferably a Buzzroaster or something similar.

Thanks,
Brad

OOps,

I may also try to build one too.  Any ideas on where to buy some of the parts, like the metal basket?  I can get the motor at Lowe's, but can't seem to find a basket anywhere.

Thanks,
Brad

BBQ Drums are available from BuzzRoasters and Ron Kyle Drums.

I've got an RK drum, and recommend it highly.

If you want to make it yourself you've got to start scounging parts. You should be looking for steel or solid stainless steel containers. Make sure the (whatever) isn't just plated, cause that'll cause problems when you go to roast.

Lowe's had a stainless steel wastepaper basket at one point, but they weren't around for long.

There are lots of other alternatives. Look for cylinder or hemispherical mesh items in the correct metal and use your imagination. One example is metal collanders, available at any kitchen supply company. Drill holes on opposite sides and use a metal ring or wire to permanently attach one side. Then a clasp of some kind can hold the "openable" side closed during roasting.

If money isn't too much of an issue I'd recommend going with a ready made drum. The RKs are solid stainless steel, have agitators, and will last for years.

Cheers

Ron is a very nice guy, produces an excellent product, and his roasting profile notes are pretty darn close to "Roasting for Dummies".

I followed his instructions to the letter, watched and listened to my roast, and whambo!

Out comes great coffee.

I like him because he is available to the customer, all year long, answers e-mails, always has product.

Like a business should be.

I could not find another person making these, that met that criteria- do your own homework, is all I say.

Good Luck

Hello,
You mention buying a motor at blowes.  There has been much discussion on the rpm of the motor.  I went from a 3 to a 15 to a 60 rpm motor.  The higher rpm is certainly the way to go.  Much more even roast IMO.
Check past threads on alt.coffee. Part sources for motors and couplers are also discussed.  Cost is reasonable.

I will certainly take a look at a higher rpm motor.  Are there any stores that stock them, or do they have to be special ordered?  I will check out alt.coffee too.  Thanks for the info everyone!

Hello,

click here This should get you close, focus on gear motors with a RPM of 50 to 60.

I think you have several threads going. I answered one with a link to a previous thread on roasters.  Several pictures including mine towards the bottom of the page.  The coupling is of interest, you will need one of some kind. The surpluscenter sells them also.  I built 2 of my own for 2 drums I built.  I like to tinker but sometimes buying the right part is just easier all around.

I bought the drum and motor/mounting assembly from Ron Kyle. Superior service, superior product. A++ all around. The motor and mount is custom made to order per your measurements. It is a bit pricey, but I doubt I would have saved much after all the messing around I would have done on my own.

I highly recommend RK over Buzz. Search around a bit; there is a thread about someone who placed an order with Buzz, paid with his CC, and never got anything, calls were not answered or returned, money was not credited back, all after several months.

I joined Buzz' forum and posted a question and never got an answer.

Take it for what it is worth. I hate to bash, but don't appreciate horrid service, and don't want to see another 'I got ripped off' thread like that.

Hello,
The RK does appear to be taking the lead compared to Buzz.
I purchased a Buzz quite sometime ago. It was shipped promptly and I have been happy with it. Who knows.

I'm using an RK Drum with a gas grill from Lowes.  I highly recommend Ron's grill.  I also suggest that you look seriously at Ron's 57rpm gear motor setup.

I've got a couple pages about my RK Drum setup on my website at http://www.terrystockdale.com .
