I tried again with my HWP, this time stoping short of first crack. The beans were just starting to get a bit brown. I tried chewing on one. It definatly was not sour. I thought I had sucess. I got out the little ceramic mortar and pestle. No chance mashing them with that. My Rocky is still not together so I put the beans in the Barista. The poor little thing choked on them. The burr locked up and the machine made an awful noise. I thought I striped the gearbox. After prying the beans from the auger with a steak knife the machine started to function again.
It seems like timing when to stop the roast is going to be very trickey.
Hmmm... I did have a few problems with grinding my beans when I tried my Maestro, but I attributed it to the cardamom which is really hard. The hand grinder was taking me forever because the beans were so 'soft' compared to a fully roasted bean.
Can you upload a snapshot of the color? If it's still yellowish, you're in the correct spot, you just need a stronger motor for your grinder and remember to grind VERY coarse.. and I mean like.. chicory.. or those huge crystals in instant coffee (maybe too small actually).. umm.. bread crumbs (not Panko)?

Hi Tarik,
I would like to up load the picture of my next attempt but I don't know how. I do have a digital camera so that is a start.
Do you think I should dare to put these beans into my Rocky after I get it together?

You have to edit your picture until it is small enough (75k) using some photo software. Then you can attach it to one of these messages when writing a post.

You're decision, of course. But I have been using my Solis Maestro to grind mine. I would recommend that you probably don't put the cardamom in there though.. I didn't like the sounds it made in my Maestro.. I may buy a cheapo blade grinder for this purpose.

I sort of did this inadvertently last night. I roasted some Ethiopian until what must have been just after first crack. (This was like my sixth roast. All previous had been pretty dark.) Through it in my Grind-n-Brew this morning and ended up with something that looked like an Earl Grey adn tasted pretty good. Still gonna roast it darker tonight. Someone pointed me at the color chart which will help I think.

A bit darker than the blond coffee which is stopped short of 1st crack and has a more yellowish color reminiscent of green tea (or urine, sorry to say), but it sounds rather nice even so.
I'm glad people are playing with such a wide variety of roasting colors. I still like dark roasted coffee (not French so much), but I'm really enjoying the lighter roasts I've been experimenting with myself.
