I need to get some ducting and a steel cart, before I can use it.  I will have to season the drum with 5-10 pounds of cheap beans (this will be practice for roasting.)

Hopefully, within a couple of weeeks, I will produce drinkable coffee with this beast!

Congratulations Mike,

It is a thing of beauty.  Bean temp readout too!  I'm impressed.

I really look forward to trying the roaster out.  It seems that it has all of the necessary features.

The learning curve, no doubt, will be steep!

Can you provide a some more background on this thing?  How did you arrive on this model?  What a beast for home use.  I'm jealous!

Guess this throws the proverbial great big bucket of ice water over that warm glow of smug satisfaction I have (had) when I look (used to look) admiringly at the brand new Bravi on MY counter.

Congrats!  What a fantiatic toy!  I,too, look forward to hearing lots about your adventures with it.

This type of roaster should not in any way detract from the greatness of your new Bravi.  I have a PID'd Alpenrost, modified by Andrew Ferencz, with which I have roasted some exceptionally good coffee.  With practice, no doubt you will do the same with your Bravi, but it will be easy to clean!  I have no intention to get rid of the Alp just yet!  I have an I-roast, which is on long-term loan to a friend.  My only problem with the Alp is that small beans stick in the drum perforations and burn.

I decided to get this roaster, because I am interested in attaining the type of control and consistency that the commercial roasters can get, and bean temp probe and airflow controls seem to be consistent features of commercial drum roasters.  I also wanted higher than 225g roasting capacity, as I use about .6-.7 pounds per week, roasted, and I also wanted to be able to roast for friends and family.

The choices came down to sample roasters, or the RK Drum.  I found the higher-tech approach of the sample roaster to be more appealing, and cooling and chaff removal functions are included.  Most of the commercial roasters I prefer use either Diedrich or Probat drum roasters.  The Probatino is attractive, but too big and I dont need to roast more than a pound at a time.  It is also $8000 plus - prohibitive for for me.  The Diedrich is smaller, looks exactly like the larger models, and has essentially the same feature set, and costs less than $4000.  It is also attractive enough to install in my kitchen, when I do the kitchen remodel to make the space. I also like the convenience that it operates on 115V 15A electric power.

and with this, there can be no upgrade fever! ... unless I go bigger... which I won't... ever... no, really!

I can't wait to play with this beast on Saturday.  I'll post more later!

Mark,

I'm not sure that it will even fit into my house without a bit of work, but it will eventually be part of the really big coffee shrine (altar?) in my kitchen.  In the mean time, I need to get a heat-resistant cart and some duct pipe to work in the garage.

If you ever head down the coast, come see it.

Pandemonium is a great cat, and is not afraid of industrial coffee equipment!
