For HotTop users that are looking for an alternative to the "factory" filter, check out randy glass's FRCN Espresso page regarding a metal mesh filter. $4.99(USD) for a reuseable, washable metal filter that apparently works. I've pushed the factory original filter to 50 roasting cycles with a very careful light brushing & vacume cleaning every 7-10 roasts. The paper element is looking real bad @ 50 roasts.

Wow, thanks. I read Randy's site, but haven't been there recently so I missed this. I was just beginning a search at the hardware store for similar replacements myself.
Sounds like adding some type of retaining device is still needed, but otherwise, the new filter sounds like a GREAT savings.
I've ordered two & they should be here on Thursday. Since the only drawback mentioned was that the screens would come loose from the carrier & be difficult to remove from the roaster, my intention is to use JB Weld to attach the screens to an original carrier.
