I am wondering, when roasting green beans in the Fresh Roast+, is it normal to have very fine chaft (spelling?), particles to land on the outside base of the machiene?  These particles are very ine and easy to remove be simply blowing them off the machiene.  I am just curious if I need to be concerned.

I tired tilting the machiene a quarter of an inch and it worked beautifully! Thanks for all your help folks.

One final question concerns the use of a Variac (sp).  Do they really make a huge difference in the roasting process?  How mcuh does one cost in Canadian funds and where can I buy one?  Are they hard to install?

Thanks for all your help,

Fine chaff getting out is normal. The original FR had a finer screen in the lid, but it used to get jammed by coffee oils, and block the airflow. The coarser FR+ screen isn't perfect, but it's an improvement.

Plugging the machine into a variac will allow you to slow down the roast from the first crack on. Slower roasts produce coffees with more sweetness and body. The tastes are slightly diminished but have more subtlety.

Another alternative is to rewire the roaster with a second outlet for the fan, and running ithe the fan alone, or the fan and the heat both on variacs. These measures will allow more drumlike profiles and an increase in roast weight. For this approach, accurate temperature sensing is required.

The addition of a variac will also result in a more even roast.  It has eliminated the burnt bean problem I had with my FR+

Hi b-b-b...
You don't need to be concerned about chaff (other than letting it dominate the work area).

Variacs are not installed, just plugged in. You plug the Variac into your power outlet and the roaster into the outlet on the Variac.

Jim mentioned it allows you to slow the roast between 1st and 2nd crack, and I would add that it allows you to slow the roast at every stage. A FR+ left to it's desires will finish in 3.5 - 5 minutes, and my Variac comes into play immediately.

I start full and decrease 15volts every 10 seconds till the beans are just trickling.

Also, a thermometer will improve the consistency of your roasts. I buy cheap $10 Marshall thermometers (the little ones) from SM's. My profiles are based on another_jim's and I can share with you should you e-mail me.

Hope this helps...
