I've just about thrown in the towel as far as home roasting goes. True, when you come up with a great roast you can really appreciate it, but what I've come to learn is that there are too many variables even when you have what is thought to be a "set it and forget it" Alpenrost.
So, what other uses are there for this roaster? Anyone have any suggestions?
Do you like roast nuts? I think the Alp would be good at that... maybe overkill (depends on your nut consumption I guess). Should be OK for smaller nuts (up to brazils), but chestnuts could be a little too big (and a lot of noise).
Otherwise...
The unused Alpenrost could be used as the subject for a UPS delivery test. It works like this... you pack it and ship it to me, send me an email stating exactly when it was sent, and I return an email telling you exactly when it was delivered. To further validate this procedure, you could take digital pictures of the box before you ship it, and I will return the same when received... This way we get hard data on UPS delivery performance.

Another good example of why you should use the heat gun roasting method, especially as a beginner. It's inexpensive and, if you end up not liking the hobby, you at least have a heat gun in your tool box.

Yeah...do something else with the Alpenrost (seems suggestions abound) and buy a Zach & Dannis which pretty much is a set and forget roaster.
We have 2 friends who are thrilled with theirs - and who are afraid of my way to active process of overseeing 3 FR+ simultaneously roasting with Variacs, and we dance and we sing...twisting knobs and throwing switches while watching thermometers...oh sorry about that.

Providence,
I believe the Alp is a damn fine roaster if it's working properly and you know how to use it. It's really not a "set and forget" roaster and neither are most other home roasters. I've got almost 500 roasts on my original Alp and it does a great job. To use the Alp and get the best from it, you really have to learn to roast using your senses, a count-up timer and several other things that promote the proper roast/machine environment. That said, some of the Alps were calibrated too cool and they didn't perform well because of it.
If you're going to kick it off a cliff, send it to me and I'll give it a happy home <grin>.

After 3 Alpenrosts in 9 months, I finally saw the light and ordered a Ron Kyle roaster. I have #7. I have never been happier. My Alp, however makes a great door stop. I think I will EBAY it as soon as I have time.
