Hi. I have been home roasting with an i-Roast2 for 4-5 months. I've tried green beans from "El Salvador Blue Bell Mountain" and "Brazil Santos". Also I did samples of beans from "Guatemalan Antigua" and "Bolivia Cenaproc". So far I have enjoyed them all, but since I had 8lbs of the Brazil and 12lbs of the El Salvador, thats what I have mostly roasted. I find I like the beans roasted to 2C or a little beyond to just getting oily. What I'd like to know is what are your favorite beans for espresso. I don't think I'm ready to blend, but maybe that's the next step. So, give me good single bean names and maybe a few simple blends. Thanks all CK's.

Kenyan , Full City Plus. Not very popular with others, but thats what i like. A nice one i like is Sweetmaria's Kenya AA Giakanja Coop Coffee Mill. If your asking what SO espresso you should try, figure out, what you like in coffee, is it acidity, is it body, do you want it to stand up in a dark roast. Try some Indonesian SO espresso's, they often have a distinct flavor from Americans and nice body with lower acidity, kinda like a rustic brazil, though harder.

Actually you are probably very ready for a blended coffee.
As you are new like I. Your roastings probably varies a little. Just a suggestion but why not drive that variance both sides of where you think you like it. Then blend some of that. You will be surprised just how much depth in flavor you can arrive at in doing so. I have been doing this. It tends to give me a few wins in doing so. I can get a more even standard, I am learning just what I will get from roasting to different levels and what tastes these combinations will give on the pallet. It really is not at all what you might expect. An your keeping the blend in the same family hence not making it to complicated to grasp to begin with.

I have some Ethiopian Ghimbi that is my all time favorite SO espresso. I haven't seen it offered in quite a while, and I'm just about out. Almost any Yemen is my 2nd favorite. Then, either of those 50/50 with Sulawisi.

Thanks for replies. It looks like I need to broaden my green bean storage to include some beans from the east. Thanks for the tip on roasting both sides of what I want. I do that now and after trying all 3 roasts I tend to mix them all together. I guess that's the start of a newbie blend.

I've got some Blue Bell Moutain green coffee and I've really enjoyed it. I haven't tried any of it since I got my Behmor and I still have a couple of pounds left. I need to roast up more coffee here so I'll roast a batch today and let you know how it does. As I recall, it was really good even when roasted with the old popcorn popper. Should be even better from the Behmor. I only have a couple of pounds left so I'll probably order some more soon.
Another coffee I really like is Selva Negra Estate in Nicaragua and their family has a coffee and wine shop here in Atlanta. You can get it for $4 per pound green from www.javavino.com (and no, I have no afiliation with them!) You can also buy it roasted. They roast every Monday. They are really nice people and have great customer service. It's nice to see a family operation with a direct path from the grower to the market here. I just went and looked and they are now offering 15 different green coffees. I'll definitely be using them more often now since they are on my way home from work and don't have to pay shipping.
