I just received my I-Roast2 today. I got it from MarltonCoffee.com and it came with 8-1/2 samples of green coffee. I programed one of the profiles I got here, loaded it up with a cup of Brazil Monte Carmelo and fired it up. I set up under my cook top's exhaust fan using a length of dryer hose. My profile was 350/3min, 375/2min, 405/2min, 425/2min, 450/2min. The machine work flawlessly but at the 4th stage the smoke from the beans over whelmed my exhaust fan and the house filled with smoke. I hit the cool button a minute into the 5th stage as I was over shooting DC+ and heading to espresso/Italian roast. I started out with a heat gun and a popper but wanted more control over the temperature. This was the 1st time I'd tried to roast inside and probably the last as I seem to have a wimpy exhaust fan. LOL I've notice that some beans are produce more smoke then others, so maybe these are extra smokey beans. Tomorrow I think I try outside and use a bean that I've roasted before. BTW. Great site, I've learned a lot by using the search feature and reading old post. Bob
Took the grease filter off my range hood and discovered that the butterfly damper was totally stuck closed, oops. Took it all apart and cleaned and lubed it and now it draws fine. Roasted some Hawaiian beans and had no problems with smoke.
Just making sure your surging means like high velocity, then a few minutes later, lower velocity. If the roast starts to surge like a pulse, every 2 seconds or so, well then you have too much coffee.
It should only change speeds as it changes stages in the profile in my experience.
Mine started surging within the same stage, it would go faster then slower then faster than slower every few seconds. I'm 99% sure it was because it was too dirty. I hadn't put the carafe in the dishwasher for a while and it was gumming up. I ran it through the dishwasher and it worked good after that. When it's sticky inside the beans jam up periodically and cause the problem.
