I've been looking for a while, and having narrowed down my choices to a Behmor or an I-Roast 2, I would choose the Behmor, based mainly in the info read here.

Now, a couple of questions that I haven't really been able to find clear answers to:

  • How repetitive are the results? E.g.: If you like a certain 300 Gm batch at a certain profile, with a certain bean / blend, can the results from that batch be easily repeated?
  • How much of an effect does ambient have on the roast results? I wouldn't imagine there's much of a difference between let's say 78 deg F and 85 deg F, but what about roasting in the garage on a cool fall day, when let's say the temps are in the 40s?? I've read that the I-Roast is really susceptible to ambient temps, where-as the Behmor isn't, but I haven't seen a clear answer to an approximate suitable temp range.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

The results can be easily repeated.  This may only be possible, however,  with a variac whereby you control the voltage.  This is what I do because my voltage varies considerably during different times of the day. Without one, the results may not be as easy to repeat unless your voltage is fairly consistent.

I have to say this is one of the many things I like so much about the Behmor.

I can't comment on your second question because i always roast in my kitchen where the temperature doesn't vary too much from month to month.

I know the Behmor will display an error code if the roaster is like 40F when you try to power it on.  It needs to be kept closer to room temperature.

the unit does seal pretty well so I don't think ambient temp would matter as much as it does with air roasters.  initial bean temp would matter more.

One safety feature embedded within the system program deals with the roaster being stored or sitting idle for periods of time in sub 45F (7.2C) temperatures. Where possible store the unit in an environment above 45F then all should be fine. Remember to unplug the roaster to reset the program.

The safety feature deals only with storage and doesn’t affect ones ability to roast in a sub 45F (7.2C) environment or setting.
