Subject: Popcorn roaster for espresso - questions...

I have a hot air popper, and tried roasting for the first time today.  I found that it went very fast.  About 2-3 minutes for first crack, and second crack followed very quickly, and when I stopped only about 10 seconds into second crack, it seemed fairly burnt.  Won't get a chance to try them for a day or two I guess.
Questions:
  1. For espresso, should i even be taking it to second crack?
  2. Where can I find instructions on how to re-wire the popper to slow it down?

The green beans I have are from greenbeanery, the choco blend, and the sweet santa blend.

Thanks!!

Gibson,

Regarding the roast level, it really just depends on your taste preferences.
There is lots of information around here and some guides at SweetMarias to
help you get an idea of what you might like to try.  Personally, I usually pull
the beans just as 2nd crack is starting to hit.  As you roast more and more,
you will begin to get a feel for what you prefer.

I started out using a modified popper, but quickly decided the batch sizes were too
small. I then moved on to a bread machine / heat gun (BM/HG) method, which I much prefer.
If you think that you might find the batch size limiting at some point, it might be worth it
to just forget modding the popper. However, if you are going to stick with the popper, then
I think the modifications are necessary. One good thing about starting out with the popper is that
when you screw up a batch, it's only a 1/3 cup or so.

Here's a link to the page I used.

Cheers,
Jordan
