Hello All
I recently bought a new chaff tray for my two year old Behmour. Does anyone else feel that the new tray slows down the roaster? I have noticed mine taking just a little longer.
Just wondered if it is me or has anyone else noticed this when switching for the old to new style tray?

Take care
Steve

Interesting their description:

"This product, furnished with new Behmor roasters, is available in limited supply as a separate product until end of January. "

Hmm, does that mean that there might be a new Behmor in the works?  Sounds like a fun rumor.

You beat me to it. My Wife go the new Chaff tray for me from Roastmasters as a Christmas gift. Realy like the open viewing area and the air vanes really seem to help speed up cooling. However, I have only done about 6 roasts with it so far.
I highly recommend it as an upgrade.

Take care

Have you noticed any changes to roast times? I plan to get one and hope that they might actually speed up due to more reflective surfaces pointing toward the beans. Any slowing in roast times would definitely be a step in the wrong direction.

With the new chaff tray we recommend doing a system pre-heat of 1 min. ..

REMINDER: Never leave the roaster unattended when in use !!   And remember to use our Rosetta Stone tip PART V PARAGRAPH 3.. it works !!!

The roast time seems to have slowed just a little. The effect on roast time seems to be minor. That is why I was asking if anyone else had noticed. Given all of the variables (environmental temp, voltage, type of beans) I am not 100% sure if chaff tray is the cause or not. I have not been able to do a reasonable (accurate) comparison between the old tray and the new one. The weather here has been very cold and the voltage coming into my house is very low.(as i write this the Kill-o-watt is reading 110.6) This is not normal for my neighborhood. The incoming voltage is normally 120 or better.
Having said all of the above I know that low voltage will extend roast times. I tried roasting 8oz of Nicaragua using 1/2P3C and ran out of time. Never got to first crack. Incoming voltage was 118 and dropped to 116 during the roast. BTW the roaster is clean enough to eat out of. LOL.
Was able to get a good roast out of some Zimbabwe using 6oz 12P3C but ran out of time at the first snaps of second. Voltage was again 118 and 116.
I am confused because I normally do not roast at 118 ( normally 120 or better). Should I be running out of time at 118?
Will try roasting some more (with new and old tray) when the voltage goes back up. Right now repeatability (due to voltage swings) stinks

Ok. I may have answered my own question. Yea, I know that I can be a little slow on the uptake. After reading my last post re the roast volumes I had an "AH HA" moment. So I went down to the garage and weighed both the old an new trays.
Old tray = 14.1 oz
New tray = 1#4.4 oz
Thats 6.3 oz of extra stainless to heat up.
Not a big deal but noticeable.

Like I stated above. I highly recommend the new tray. Bean cooling is greatly improved.

Kudos to Joe on designing a great product and making the upgrades available to everyone with an older unit.

Roast em if ya got em.

I ordered the new tray today from the Roastmasters people.  Neither Sweet Marias or the Coffee Project had any in stock out here on the West Coast.
