My Walgreens hot air popcorn popper sounds like its on its last legs. Its been great for over 2 years, roasting 1-2 batches a week. I went to a few local Walgreens to get a replacement and it looks like they don't carry them anymore. Does anyone have a recommendation for a like machine. We've got Targets, Walmarts, K-marts in the area.

thanks in advance,

John

Look around for a used West Bend.  Tag sales, goodwill stores, eBay, etc.

On my last trip to Target they had the Sunbeam air popper in stock for $20.  They come and go according to time of year.  It has the correct type of side vents although I have no personal experience with this particular brand.  They tend to be rebadges anyway.  I'm using a Toastmaster 6203 from Amazon.  It roasts too hot so you have to use various methods to slow it down but I figure that's better than not roasting hot enough.  Pay no attention to bad reviews.  The more people complain about how bad the machine is at popping popcorn, the more likely it is that it will make a great coffee roaster.

Thanks for the tips. I'll keep my eyes open at thrift stores and if I can't find one of the used ones I may go the Amazon route.

Send postage and I'll send you a couple of poppery II, and one dismantled with the parts for a dimmer switch mod.
I'm moving onto my sailboat, and don't have room for this stuff. (where the heck will the Behmor go?)

You pay the ups, I'll send 'em.

THey are thrift store finds, work, and I'm more than happy to pass them along to get someone going....

send me a PM

A good place to look for the future is Walgreens Drugs.  After Christmas I picked up two red holiday poppers discounted down to $5 each.  1200 Watts and no screen in the bottom so they are designed like the Poppery.  These are a little light so $5 is about what they are worth considering the glut of used ones available in most thrift stores.

This was the first one I ever tried. I hated it. 1C in 90 seconds, too hot too fast so I found a Poppery II--unless you want to really dig in and modify it, my .02$ is Poppery II or something equivalent.

My Walgreens model lasted over 2 years, making one or two batches a week. I never weighed the beans. Instead I would just pour them in the chamber until they were barely moving. Then I'd take a wooden spoon and agitate them for a couple of minutes until they would move on their own. I had a 1 x 2 piece of wood I would prop under the front of the popper. At that angle the beans would move around much better and not start spilling out prior to 2nd crack. 1st crack was usually around 4 minutes and 2nd around 8, depending on the weather.

The Popaire II is only 1050W, but holds a lot more beans. I roast about twice as many in that unit compared to the Walgreens unit but have to agitate the beans with the spoon longer. Also, the plastic hood of the Walgreens unit was really cheap and the top melted away not long after I started roasting with it. I had to fashion an aluminum foil hood around the base of what was left of the original plastic hood. It worked but looked like a 3rd grade science experiment.

They are worth getting on sale at Walgreen's for sure - I guess they get one shipment in around Thanksgiving - they were $19.99 at first then went on sale before X-Mas to $14.99.  Between X-Mas and New Year's ours dropped the price to $4.99 till they sold out.  I bet they bring them back this season but the manufacturer or specs could change from year to year.  Agreed that the hoods do not last long but the right size tin can works well enough. I will try the angle trick - good idea there.
