I have some Ethiopia Harar Longberry from SM due in tomorrow, and having never roasted any longberry I am wondering if I need to watch for any nuances that may be different from roasting non-longberry beans?  I think I read somewhere that longberry beans were a little larger than other beans, so I figure I will be using P2 on my Behmor.  Does this sound about right?  SM says these beans are 16/18 screen and I plan on taking them to FC.

Just realized what a silly question this was... I was thinking about peaberries... the longberry should not present any problems.
Moderators, feel free to delete this thread (post) since it was a silly question.  My mistake... I'm learning... I think.

It's actually not a completely silly question.  I don't have any experience with the Behmor, but long beans are long.  They really are pretty big so agitation can be an issue, especially as they expand.

The Behmor has nice fins inside the drum so I don't think agitation will be an issue but I think I might need to keep a very close watch on these beans to see how fast (or slow) the roast progresses.

Longberry Harrar is one of the four beans I roast regularly in my Behmor. I generally take it just to the start of second crack. I use P3 as a standard and never roast more than ten ounces at a time. After you learn what to listen for, you should get consistently good results.

P3 A, B, or C? Also, do you use the 1/2# or the 1# setting?

10 Ounces C at the 1 pound setting. My power tends to run a bit low (about 117) and it fluctuates a bit. The C setting provides sufficient buffer to complete the roast, usually at about the 3 minute point.

The Ethiopian Harar Longberry have become my very favorite beans for an espresso blend.  I have never before achieved so much mango-like fruit flavor.  I take them to what I think is full city in my Hottop.  By that I mean first crack has stopped for about half a minute but there痴 no sign of second crack.

Does anyone more experienced than I know this bean and can they recommend other beans that have a similar taste profile (and why)?  To me the fruit is sweeter and deeper than I知 used to in other more citrusy Ethiopians.   I just went back to Sweet Marias to place my third order and I know they値l have to run out one of these days and I値l be jonesing big time.

Stock up and vac seal a year's supply if you like them so much.  Coffee can be such a crap shoot from year to year and even lot to lot, especially Ethiopian coffees not purchased directly from the farm or mill.  It sounds to me like you are more likely at a city + roast unless you are roasting really fast at the finish and are at the verge of second crack which is what is considered full city.  When you do run out of your Longberry try other DP coffees from Ethiopia or even Central America as these tend to be fruit forward, similar to what you are experiencing now.  I really have enjoyed the Panama Elida natural processed and Ethiopia Tchembe this year but have yet to find a Harrar that I enjoyed immensely enough to re-order.
