I wouldn't be a bit suprised if Klatch buys from bodhileaftrading.com in Yorba Linda Calif. Just point of interest. I just ordered 10 lbs Sumatran Blue Batak, 5 lbs Brazil Bob-o- Link and 5 lbs El Salvador it is fantastic. I think the total was about $124.00 shipped in Vac packed bags in large flat rate box. very fast shipping. Rich

Costco. Two stores in the metro DC area have roasters and sell their greens in 30lb boxes. The beans are a bit generic - sumatra, columbia, seattle blend, decaf columbia. Costs are $3-$4lb. I've been very pleased with the quality. Of course you won't confuse the coffee for something you get from SM's, and the quantity may be hefty for some, but I've been uniformly pleased with the quality which I can't say for everything I've bought online. I can pick it up and I think I didn't even have to pay tax (don't quote me on that). YRMV. Stephen

Doesn't look like anyone has mentioned the Green Coffee Buying Club yet. Excellent coffees with useful cupping information. Prices are as good or better than anything else around due to the co-op nature of the group. About the only drawback is that the selection of available coffees changes from month to month and some of the best sell out very quickly.

GCBC is great, but you do have to be ready to leap on a distro the minute it's posted or risk losing out on it. While it was available I was using Stubbie's Brazil Moreninha as my espresso base, but the greater world discovered the bean and now it's almost impossible to get. If I had more space/time/money available, I'd start buying bags from Royal and Atlas and start doing distros myself.

I second that. I've got 90 lbs of Costco green beans at less than $4.00/lb and have been very pleased with the results in my Behmor. I normally buy from Gen-X Coffee, but Costco's prices can't be beat. I'm just sorry I passed on the Kenyan beans a few months ago at $6.00/lb.

I'm in LA and by my beans from a place called City Bean. They have an online shop and most varieties are under $7.00 a pound and costs about $11 to ship to New York (used that just as an example).

I've bought from City Bean as well, as their roastery is just down the street from me. They're really nice folks and they have okay, but not stellar quality beans. They are sadly lacking in information about bean origin, though. If you're happy buying a bean that's simply labeled "Costa Rica Estate", that's fine, but there are an awful lot of 'estates' in Costa Rica.
One of the reasons I roast is to have better coffee. Sure, just the fact that I'm roasting it myself means it's fresher and I have more control over the final product, but paying $6.50/lb. for a bean were I pretty much only know the country of origin when I can pay the same or slightly less for better beans from other sources and get more complete information, to boot, just doesn't make a lot of sense. A lot of the less pricey bean sources I see cited seem to be selling more commodity coffee, or at least on the commodity end of specialty coffee. I prefer to buy from a source whose cupping skills I trust, even if it means paying a little more (though usually it doesn't).

does Costco sales green beans at this / your location only? I've been to 4-5 Costco stores locally and never seen any green beans, just already roasted (over roasted). I'm in SF Bay Area.

After reading through this thread and seeing all the different estate names, the thought did occur to me that City Bean is pretty generic in naming where their coffees come from! I also wondered how their quality compares to the mail order places mentioned. Your reply brought home that realization into concrete reality.
I recently graduated from a popcorn popper and admit I know just the very basics about bean origins. I would love to know where you get your green beans from, if you get them locally.

We have one Costco in the area where their beans are roasted, which are then apparently distributed to the other stores. So, that location is the only one where green beans are sold. I assume your area has one similar Costco.
