Phil, had one of those new, red Chinese variacs for 4.5 months. Used it, with no over-fusing, with a Gene Cafe. It burnt up. Standing there roasting one day and pretty soon we had smoldering and plastic/electrical aroma. Seller wanted to replace it; I wanted refund. No deal. No way I was going to use that in my home.
I put it out to the curb and bought an old Powerstat off eBay. Works like a champ, 4 years later. Just one anecdote but I think pretty telling.
