... Back a few years back folks were buying 500 VA cheap Chinese variable transformers and "over fusing" them. That practice always gave me the Willies but they got by. When the poor thing would expire after a short life they would complain that they were "cheap Chinese junk". My guess is that they would have had a decent life if used within their ratings.
Phil, had one of those new, red Chinese variacs for 4.5 months. Used it, with no over-fusing, with a Gene Cafe. It burnt up. Standing there roasting one day and pretty soon we had smoldering and plastic/electrical aroma. Seller wanted to replace it; I wanted refund. No deal. No way I was going to use that in my home.
I put it out to the curb and bought an old Powerstat off eBay. Works like a champ, 4 years later. Just one anecdote but I think pretty telling.
