Further to my bckward (high grown coffee) roasting curve. Let me add that 1st crack was so loud that my grandson, who serves as my 'hearing ear' 'dog' '-)) called in from the living room over the blaring TV set. "Their popping papa!" Heck even I heard the crack. Sounded like hail on a windshield.

Bob, I see what you mean.  (I'm learning.)  I'll give it a try.  I'm certain I'll see an improvement in my roasts.  Thanks for posting.  They really help.

Kenneth,

We're all learning from each other here. My football coach used to say, "there are no dumb questions, only dumb people" Wha'd he mean by that? '-)) Just kidding. This is the place we all come to learn. Happy to share.

(Actually its "The only dumb question is the one you don't ask.)

I've been getting charcoal roasts if the screen isn't kept very clean.   Since beans vary in the amount of
chaff and the unit is very sensitive to the amount of chaff, it's hard to get a consistant roast.  I'm going to
start leaving the screen lid off and see if that helps.  Or perhaps lifting it off briefly during the roast to
clean it off and restore airflow.

Can anyone verify that setting a higher temp actually speeds up the temp increase?  Ie, does
setting 460 get to 420 faster then just setting 420?

In general, I don't think that thermostatically controlled systems work any faster with a higher set
temp.

Here are interesting curves that tend to support your view.

It seems to me that for each type of bean roasted (using the same profile) you should get about the same amount of chaff. If things are getting too dark too fast, reduce the temp in the first two stages. Keep in mind that pre blended beans in most cases will not roast at the same rate thus giving you several degrees of roast for the batch. Many times this may be desired depending on the blend.
What beans are you using?

I am presently using a profile of:
Step 1 – 2 min at 350
Step 2 – 3 min at 450
Step 3  - 10 min at 485    with a manual cool at the desired roast.
Using this profile and SM’s Liquid Amber Espresso Blend it takes about 13.5 min to reach my desired roast at the peak of second crack.
But I am about to reduce the temps more in an attempt to nail the roast I’m looking for.

Another example of how these machines vary.  To get well into second crack on SM's Liquid Amber I do:

Step 1 - 2:30 @ 350
Step 2 - 2:30 @ 410
Step 3 - 3:00 @ 450

And I usually stop somewhere with 1 to 2 minutes to go.  That's about 6 to 7 minutes for the roast.

Face the unit.  Put the handle on the right and settle it into the slot.  Notice the saw tooth depressable button on the right on the base.  Place hand firmly on the handle, press down and rotate toward you.  The unit will lock in place, depressing the button which will allow you to roast.

Also, the unit will not opperate if it is below 65 degrees.  An issue in my part of the country.  Good luck.
