I just started and have roasted a few successful espresso blends and beans from Honduras. There are some that may be very dark and some very light. Is an even roast possible on the Whirley Pop and if so can you look at my process and give me any suggestions. Thanks.
I have read many of the suggestions on this site and read the Home Roasting Coffee book.
I have been roasting about 5.3 oz at a time on low to low-medium heat on a side burn on my grill oustide. I use a turkey fryer thermometer and drop the beans when it is between 400-450. The temp drops to 350ish and I crank constantly (I have tried fast and slow turns). My first crack ranges from 4-6 minutes and I drop the heat to low and my second crack ranges from 6-9 minutes. I have to slow the spinning so I can hear the cracks. So sometimes I stop for a few seconds to listen then crank again. I also don't open the lid until after the first crack.
So, any suggestions or should I now worry about the beans being even color? Also any suggestions for a turning speed?

The Whirley POP is an awesome roaster! I would consider getting a digital thermometer and a K-type probe you can allow to make contact with the beans for more accurate temp. Also stick to a medium heat to allow a longer roast time (total 15-18min). This will give you better tasting coffee and more even roast. This also allows you to crank slower so you don't kill your wrist while roasting. I found that a 700W electric burner on medium works best. I am not sure if you have the model with the plastic gears but if/when it eventually breaks down get an SS (Stainless Steal model) Doesn't have to be a whirley pop. The thicker metal will allow a slower heat transfer which will prevent scortching.
