Hi all! My name is Jon and my wife just got a 4 pound RK drum for Christmas. 2 years ago she started me off with a Fresh Roast SR300 (I had only mentioned the thought about possibly trying to roast my own coffee) and have just about roasted that little guy to death since then. So I'm really excited about this drum and building a higher capacity roaster.
I've been reading a ton about different types of BBQ setups and will probably start off with something cheap off craigslist to get me going. Thinking about gas BBQ setups it seems like they could be improved upon as far as volume being heated, heat retention, etc especially with a smaller drum like my 4 pounder. I've started thinking about getting a 5 gallon stainless steel drum and having my metalworking buddy cut it in half to basically turn it into a small version of one of those 55 gallon oil drum BBQs. I'd then give it some hinges, put it on a stand, add some sort of burner, appropriate insulation/heat diffusion, exhaust, rotisserie attachments, and the like. Is this a terrible idea? What sorts of problems might I encounter and should consider?
