Hi!

I just pan roasted my first coffee beans!   The house smells delicious and I can't wait till tomorrow morning to taste!

I want to buy beans for roasting and really get into this, but I have a couple of thoughts.

  1.  I like Italian roast for espresso - thick, dark, rich, strong.

  2.  I like to  buy organic, fair trade products...and am happy to buy direct from a reliable farmer...

  3.  And I want to know what is the best way to roast beans.  Pan?  Air Popper?  Heat Gun?  Or... buy a roaster... I'm a little afraid of buying ANOTHER piece of equipment to store in my kitchen... I already can't find the counter top... but if it is the way to go... then I'll go for it... SO... if it is a roaster:  please recommend one!

Thank you so much for your thoughts on this!     I really want to find a reliable seller with top quality green beans that would be AWESOME for a nice DARK ROAST!

I use a Gaggia grinder and a La Pavoni Pro espresso hand crank machine.

Thanks for your thoughts on this...  =)

Oh dear, there is just so much here and on home barrista that will help guide you right... just takes a bit of trolling (in the nice way) to find it.
also, you can't go wrong seeking information at sweet marias dot com nor Randy's site at espressomyespresso.
When you've added to your foundation knowledge the feed back you may get will make far more sense.

Good hunting and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes up for you!

Welcome to the art of roasting.

Roasting in a pan inside really requires a strong fan to pull out the odors, much of which is chemical stuff you really don't want to breathe that much.

Your taste preferences will change over time.  When you get a dedicated roaster, you will likely try other roast levels.  Nowadays I aim for Full City rather than Full City +.

A hot air popper is a good and cheap way to start and you learn a lot early on.  The Behmor is only $300 and is very sturdy.

Sweet Marias is a great source to learn about coffees, roasting, and to buy stuff.

Good luck.  Have fun.
