Espresso: Experimenting Grinder: Antique Hand grinder... Roaster: Cast Iron Dutch Oven
Posted Sat Dec 28, 2013, 7:24am Subject: Newbie with Burundi Bourbon question
Hi all, I'm fairly new to roasting/grinding my own coffee, I've only done about 10 pounds since starting last year. I roast in a deep seasoned cast iron dutch oven kettle which seems to work well for me. I have a new electric grinder that is only good for very fine grind, and a wonderful antique wooden drawer hand grinder that was my grandmothers. It gives a perfect texture grind. I just purchased some Burundi Bourbon green beans from EBAY, mainly b/c of the description. The first test batch I roasted a bit longer than I intended to-to far into the second crack. I quickly poured them into a colander and ran outside into the snowy cold wind, and tossed the chaff and cooled them. They have a very nice bright citrus flavor, but a bit of a sour after-taste. I'm going to use the 5-6 oz I roasted, they retry, but I'm wondering if anyone else has tried these particular beans? "Burundi A Nyarunazi Bourbon" ? They were not expensive, so probably are not the best, but I'm intrigued by the description. They also didn't seem to have the oil content other beans I've roasted had.
EDIT/UPDATE: It has been 2 days since I roasted the beans. It has lost all of it's sourness, so I'm guessing it was due to me being impatient and trying it before it 'rested' It's still a bit bitter, but as I said above It may have roasted a tad too long...I'll try another batch. Nobody else tried the Burundi A Nyarunazi Bourbon? I'm curious to hear others reviews of this bean.
