Hey guys, I figured I'd make a new post to show how I did this since it might be useful to someone else. I tested it with shredded paper towel and it works REALLY well! I had my chaff ejector built, but the big gap under the ring leading up to the chute bothered me. You can see it here:
It looked to me like chaff would fly out under the ring, negating the benefit of the ring...which is having all chaff exit in a orderly manner, and probably losing lots of heat. My fix was to make another ring with a chute like this:
MUCH better with little or no gap under the ring leading up to the chute. I'm probably not the first to think of this, but I was pretty proud of my mod. Just figured I'd share it on here to prevent someone else from making my initial mistake.
Well....with shredded paper towels (I literally put paper towel in our food processor) it kicked the pieces out and right into the bowl I had set up. Granted, actually coffee chaff may behave differently, but I'm pretty confident it will work just fine. This is actually my first roaster, and I'm yet to do my first roast! I'm finishing my cooling rig this week, and I'll be roasting this weekend. I'm getting pretty excited!
I'm a few weeks ahead of you. I built my set up a few weeks ago and have been through 12-13# already. I love that it can roast 1# at a time very evenly.
I would highly recommend some kind of thermocouple set up so you can monitor temperature. I mounted a probe to the bottom and bent the stirring arms to go up and over. It measures the temp of the beans moving over it.
I also cannibalized the power switch from my fried Air Crazy and used it to be able to turn the heat on or off on the SC. I roast in my NJ garage where it's pretty cold. It helps to use the bottom heat to get it up to temp.
