Greetings,

What's the best method of getting a thermocouple into the bed of hot beans?

Thanks,

BobY,

Thanks for the photo.

I can't tell from the photo if you drilled any holes to get into the chamber or did you just snake it through all the obstacles?

Here is my approach. I just put the top on my drill press and enlarged one of the holes in the chaff collector screen ( the hole in the plastic at the edge not in the mesh) and drilled right through the other two pieces. Make sure that you deburr the holes after drilling them. I ruined two probes by carelessly abrading the insulation.

Here it is in the bean mass. The fixture weighs about 190 grams, the beans weigh 150 grams. The mass acts to slow the beads reaction to temp changes. Since there is a delay between the time that the outside of the beans hit a certain temperature and the time that the inside of the beans stabilize at that same temp, adding some thermal delay seems advisable. Whether mine is too little, too much or just right, I couldn't say. I do get repeatable results with it, though.

Hi Cliff,
The TC probe isn't really meant to be too flexible. That's why I use it instead of a sheathed pair or similar; because when I install it as shown, it's permanent, stays nicely in place and is in the same place for every roast.

It's easily bent but I wouldn't want to flex it too much. It's a subminiature quick-disconnect probe, type-K, 0.125" O.D. stainless steel sheath, grounded junction, 6" length and has a very fast reaction time. So, not wanting to bend it too much, I drilled a very tiny hole right through the top all the way into the chamber and mounted it by its connector on the chaff collector adapter. It works fine, doesn't seem to affect the air flow,  and I can still use the adapter for the exhaust venting if I want.

I might add that  I tried Bob Y's approach but it wouldn't work with my too flexible K-probe wire. When I get around to ordering a stiffer wire, I may forgo the weight.

Greetings,

Thanks  Bob x 2 for your responses. Hearthware is out of replacement parts so I'll wait until they are back in stock before I start drilling.

The I-Roast is roaster number three in my ever growing collection of coffee stuff and as my Grandpa used to say " I tink I'm liking it da best".

Thanks again,

Cliff Isackson
